📈 Why SSD & HDD Prices Have Been Rising in India (Last 2 Years)

SSD prices in India

For many years, computer storage prices kept falling. SSDs became faster and cheaper, and hard disks were affordable for everyone.
But in the last two years, this trend has changed in India.

As shown in the chart above, SSD and hard disk prices have gone up steadily from 2023 and are expected to stay high in 2026–27.

impact on global shortages

The chart shows price trends in Indian Rupees (₹) for popular storage devices:

  • 🔵 Blue line → WD 1TB SSD
  • 🟠 Orange line → Average 1TB SSD price in India
  • 🟢 Green line → Internal 1TB HDD
  • 🔴 Red line → External 1TB HDD

The Y-axis shows price in ₹

What Has Happened in the Last Two Years (2023–2025)

SSD Prices Increased Sharply

From the chart:

  • WD 1TB SSD was around ₹6,000 in 2023
  • By 2025, it reached around ₹10,000
  • Average 1TB SSD prices also crossed ₹10,500

This means SSD prices increased by nearly 60–70% in just two years.

HDD Prices Rose Slowly

  • Internal 1TB HDD moved from ₹7,000 → ₹8,000
  • External 1TB HDD moved from ₹5,000 → ₹6,500

HDD prices did increase, but much more slowly than SSDs.
This is why the green and red lines in the chart are flatter.

Why Are SSD Prices Rising So Much?

1. AI and Data Centers Are Buying All the Memory

Big companies running AI, cloud servers, and data centers buy huge amounts of NAND flash memory.
SSDs use the same memory, so less supply is left for consumers.

2. Companies Reduced Production

Major manufacturers like Western Digital, Samsung, Micron reduced NAND production earlier to avoid losses.
Now demand is back, but supply is tight — so prices rise.

3. Indian Market Effect

India depends on imports. When global prices rise:

  • Import cost increases
  • Dollar rate affects pricing
  • GST and logistics add more cost

That’s why Indian SSD prices increase faster than expected.

Comparison: SSD vs HDD (Based on Chart)

Storage Type2023 Price2025 PriceChange
WD 1TB SSD₹6,000₹10,000🔼 Big rise
Avg 1TB SSD₹6,500₹10,500🔼 Big rise
Internal 1TB HDD₹7,000₹8,000🔼 Small rise
External 1TB HDD₹5,000₹6,500🔼 Medium rise

👉 The chart clearly shows SSDs are becoming expensive much faster than HDDs.

Projected Prices for Next Year (2026–2027)

Looking at the upward direction of the lines in the chart, experts expect prices to stay high or rise further.

Expected Indian Prices (From Chart Projection)

  • 🔵 WD 1TB SSD → ₹11,500 (2026) → ₹12,500+ (2027)
  • 🟠 Average 1TB SSD → ₹12,000 → ₹13,000+
  • 🟢 Internal 1TB HDD → ₹8,500 → ₹9,000
  • 🔴 External 1TB HDD → ₹7,200 → ₹8,200

The chart shows no sharp downward movement, which means cheap SSDs may not return soon.

What This Means for Indian Buyers

For Normal Users

  • SSD upgrades are now costly
  • Buying earlier may save money if prices rise further

For PC Builders & Gamers

  • Budget planning is important
  • SSD + HDD combo is still a cost-effective option

For Students & Offices

  • External HDDs remain cheaper for backup
  • SSDs should be used only where speed is required
